MUJI online store and app suspended: what still works, who may be affected, and what to check

Paper shopping bags

Summary: On Friday 6 November 2026, Ryohin Keikaku, the company behind MUJI, suspended the whole MUJI online store (Muji netto sutoa) and almost all of the MUJI app to strengthen security. It aims to restart within one to two days, but has not given a date. MUJI stores in Japan are open as usual, and the membership barcode in the app still works. The stop follows a data incident that the company says may affect up to about 27.26 million records. If you ever held a MUJI Card that you joined by July 2021, check your card statement. Everyone with an account should be careful with messages that claim to be from MUJI.

What applies to you: MUJI Card joined by July 2021, check your statement; card saved in the app, check your statement; app or online store account, be careful with messages and change reused passwords; shop only in stores, nothing to do.

The company describes the stop as extra security work. The 6 November notice does not say that a new leak was found, and it does not change the groups of people described on 4 November.

Who may be affected

The company first announced the incident on 30 October and widened it on 4 November. The second notice added online store members who do not use the app, and people who have left the service. Use this table to find your group. You can be in more than one.

If you… Information that may have been accessed Scale
Have used the MUJI app or online store, including former members Email address, date of birth, gender, member ID Up to about 27.26 million records
Are in a part of that group Also name, address and phone number About 520,000 records
Joined the MUJI Card between October 2000 and July 2021, including cancelled and expired cards Full card number, MUJI Card ID, date of birth. For some people, also name, address, phone number, gender and email address About 1.09 million records (about 345,000 cards still usable)
Saved a credit card in the app or online store (some users only) First 6 and last 2 digits, and the name on the card About 120 records

Checked: 2026-11-06. Sources: Ryohin Keikaku second notice and Credit Saison.

The company and the card issuer say card expiry dates and security codes are not included. MUJI Cards issued in August 2021 or later are not affected. On 4 November, the company said it had not confirmed any leak to the dark web or any misuse of the data. Credit Saison said it had not confirmed a rise in fraudulent MUJI Card use.

People affected will be contacted by email or post, in turn. Credit Saison will contact MUJI Card members whose details MUJI does not have. Because notices go out in turn, having no message yet does not prove you are safe.

What you can do now

  1. If you have a MUJI Card, check your statement. Look for charges you do not recognize. Contact Credit Saison if you find one. You can see the month you joined in Saison Portal or Net Answer, under the menu for checking your customer details (okyakusama joho no kakunin / henko).
  2. Consider a new card if you are worried. You can ask for a reissue in Net Answer or Saison Portal. It takes time to arrive. Your card number will change, so you may need to update bills that are paid with that card.
  3. Do not give card details to anyone who contacts you. The company says it never asks for credit card information by email or phone. Do not trust a caller just because they know your address or birthday. Our guide to fake SMS messages in Japan shows how to check a message safely.
  4. Do not use links in “restart” messages. While the store is stopped, a message saying “log in again” or “the store has reopened” could be fake. Type the official address yourself, or use the news page on the official site.
  5. Change reused passwords. The notices do not mention passwords. Even so, if you use one password on many services, this is a good time to give your important accounts their own passwords.

Warning signs in fake messages

  • An “apology coupon” or “points as compensation” that asks you to log in or enter a card number
  • A message that says your card was misused and rushes you to give a number, PIN or security code
  • A request to call back a phone number written in the message or letter
  • A sender address or link that does not match the official website

There is also a separate case. On 2 November, the company announced unauthorized access at a contractor’s server for made-to-order curtains. It covers 19,933 records of orders placed from 10 April 2018 to 25 January 2022. Those people will be contacted by post.
